Clear Clutter with the Cycle of Completion

Clutter exists in many forms: physical, emotional, and mental. No matter what shape clutter takes it’s a drain on our livelihood.  Today I would like to share with you one important method to clear clutter from your mind.  This is through the understanding the cycle of completion.

The cycle of completion is a method to clear clutter mentally.  Answer this question for me, if you will.  How many objectives, projects and tasks do you have sitting on your plate right now?  How many uncompleted past projects do you have lingering around in your head?
Fifteen completed projects have more power than forty five partially completed ones. Let’s begin going through the cycle of completion.

Begin to clear clutter by listing all of your uncompleted tasks, personal commitments, objectives, and projects out on a sheet of paper.  You are now ready to begin making decisions about these items.   Jack Canfield, author of The Success Principles Journey (this is where this ideas comes from) suggests to decide in one of the following manners.

  • Ditch: the project gets tossed
  • Delegate:  outsource the project to someone else
  • Action: complete it
  • File: File it away for a future date.

Listing and deciding which uncompleted projects is the first step to clear clutter from your mind.  Create a tickler file for the projects you decide to file away.  Consider putting four hanging jacket folders in your file cabinet, one for each quarter.  Create folders one for each month to designate what projects get your complete attention for the month.

You can achieve more by completing less, just as long as the tasks get your total focus.   Clear clutter from your mind today by listing incomplete projects, make decisions, and file for a future date to see the difference.  Personally I have done this myself, and it has created all the difference in the world.

  1. I use the 4 D’s to action the many small tasks that come my way and have found this makes an incredible difference to completing tasks. It gives a real freedom
    > Dump it
    > Delegate it
    > Do it NOW [if it takes less than 2 minutes]
    > Date it [for the future when I can do it]

    • I couldn’t agree with you more. Before I started using this strategy I found myself running around like with a chicken with it’s head cut off…not accomplishing anything and in a state of inertia. Since I have been using it I get a lot more accomplished in less time and I make progress on my goals.
